Dear Cute One at Idle Rich Pub,
I now know your name and you know mine. The next question is when. I'll do my best to make it by before I leave town. By the way, I was only pretending to watch the Mavericks game. I only went over there because I wanted to talk to you. It worked.
See you soon,
j

The Greatest
Dear Tony Romo,
You are a fucking stud! It was just a month ago that I had pronounced the Cowboys dead. And now I am quite certain that playoffs are in the future for this team. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed being at the game yesterday. We tailgated and then enjoyed your five touchdown performance. You've breathed new life into this season for the team and I am loving every minute of it. Thank you so much for this.
Your Fan,
j

Help
Dear Habitat for Humanity,
Today was my first experience at one of your events and might I say, I really enjoyed it. Each year, my church sponsors a community project. Since I've been involved, I've participated each year. Today's was my favorite. I have to admit that I had so many things on my mind to complete today that I thought about skipping out. If I had, I would have never learned how to put up siding on a house or how to use a nail gun. Everyone that participated was very nice and very helpful. And it was a chance for me to meet some new people that attend services. I hope we do our project with you again next year. I had a great time.
Lovingly,
j

Your Biggest Fan
Dear Voxtrot,
Words cannot express how much I enjoyed last night's show at the Bowery Ballroom. I really wish that I had gone the night before. I think it was very cool of you to play so many song from the highly anticipated (by me, anyway) full-length that comes out in April. I was so glad when you played Raised by Wolves, The Start of Something, and Soft & Warm. It was fun to sing along with them, especially the end of each of those songs. I was hoping for Four Long Days in the encore, but was very happy to get Missing Pieces. You're probably the best band that I've discovered this year.
Ramesh, it was cool to meet you and buy you a drink at The Annex after the show. You understand that I couldn't possibly take the money that you offered me. The music that you make is worth all the drinks that I could ever buy for you. Thank you, again.
After I left the bar, I was in such a wonderfully happy mood that I walked home in the cold and the rain. All the way from Orchard and Stanton to East Eighteenth Street and Third Avenue, dancing and smiling. The rain never felt so good. I never felt so alive.

The Island
Dear New York,
After returning today from a ten day hiatus, I had a familiar feeling. It was about this time of year in 2002 that we first met. I had a lot of extra time, a lot of extra money, and a lot of ambition to travel on my own in a car from Dallas. I remember when I got here I took a, what seems crazy now, long walk from West Seventy-Seventh and Broadway down to Battery Park. As I arrived back today and was walking to lunch through Union Square, I was reminded of that walk. Maybe it was the cool fall weather, but I came to a realization while walking.
I am really going to miss you when this ends.
People tell me that after being with you for a year, that you are usually ready to leave. Unless something changes in the next three months, I can't imagine that will happen. I'm enjoying this and have met some great people. There truly is nobody else like you. I promise to cherish these next several months with you.
Yours Truly,
j

Come and See
Dear Bands I Saw This Week,
Thank you so much for providing such an amazing week of music. You are the true definition of what makes this thing we call music so great. I'll address each of you individually.
Do Make Say Think - Though I had never hear you, I was quite impressed by your instrumental rock. I met your saxophonist after the show and he convinced me to buy one of your CDs. The first listen was quite positive. I'm looking forward to getting more familiar with it.
Broken Social Scene - I caught a little of your act at Lollapalooza this past August and was inspired to check out your music. I am glad that I did because it is quite good. And you all put on such a wonderful show. See the enclosed picture of us at your show.
Decemberists - Can you possibly get any better? I really loved the stuff from the new album that you played. It was wonderful to see you guys again. You still leave me at the end of every show never wanting it to end. I was glad that so many of my music loving friends came out to witness your musical greatness. You were right, Colin. This was a wonderful show.
Secret Machines - I was very excited when I showed up to the Lizard Lounge on Friday night and saw a round stage in the back that you guys would play on. My suspicion was that it would suit you guys well. Did it ever. That intimate setting was easily one of the coolest things that I have ever experienced at a live show. Standing in the front just behind Josh made the show a true pleasure. Thanks for such an amazing show.
And to all my friends that attended these shows with me, thank you for such wonderful companionship. I want to give a special thanks to Nick for allow us to hang out in the VIP sections both nights at The Gypsy Tea Room too.
In All Glory,
j

One Big Holiday
Dear New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals,
Thanks for a wonderful week of games. Thanks for bringing together old friends and new friends of mine to see games 6 and 7. That was so cool have those from St. Louis come up to New York to visit so spontaneously. I had a great time and the games and afterward at the bars with everyone. Getting in and out of Queens is always a pain, but it was a pain certainly worth enduring. I was really hoping the Mets would win, but was not too heartbroken when they lost game 7. Thanks again for bringing us together for a wonderful week.
With Much Love,
j

So, So Disappointed
Dear Mr. President,
Today is a sad day in our wonderful nation's history. I learned that you signed legislation to legally allow torture to prison detainees. Learning this made me very sad. Just because you make something legal, does not make it right. I don't feel that torture is a value that we should strive for in our wonderful country. Sure, I understand that those who wish to harm us do exist. But must we abandon our principles and ability to behave as a civilized society for this? I refuse to believe that you (and your supporters of this bill) are living out the Christian principles that you so often boast and throw in the faces of your countrymen. I also don't believe the man you call your savior, Jesus, would have signed this bill. You continue to be a hypocrite in my eyes with your poorly thought out policies and uncivilized behavior.
j
PS - Great leaders do not blame their predecesors for their disposition. Great leaders admit their mistakes and take corrective action. You have failed at both of these during your terms in office.

How To Disappear Completely
Dear This Week,
Are you odd or what? I haven't had anything to do and it has been remarkably wonderful. I've had so much time to relax and sleep. I know this probably won't last long, but I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you being here right now. I imagine that when I return to Dallas this weekend, there were will be lots to do. Until then, I'll be sitting here, continuing to learn to play acoustic guitar. It's nice to have no plans for once.
Sincerely,
J

I...will try on New York City
Dear New York,
Just when I thought we were over and I had everything I wanted from you, you came back. I had a great time seeing some great people at circle worship at the UU church. And the discussion was wonderful too. I am looking forward to spending more time with them.
To add to it, I really enjoyed the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show in Central Park tonight. I was even able to secure a limited edition fall tour EP. I am so excited about the next album. I can't wait for it to come out.
For a while there, I thought we had no chance of being together after this spring. Now, I am thinking that I want to give you a chance again.
With So Much Love,
J

We're Floating in Space
Dear Wayne, Steven, and Michael,
Your final show of the tour last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom was magnificent. The music that you create both on your records and in concert has brought me immense joy on so many occasions. The confetti, the streamers, and the balloons really add a fun and unique touch to a live show. I really enjoyed all the songs you played from At War With The Mystics. Singing along to the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song is truly a lot of fun. The W.A.N.D. kicked so much ass that I was dancing like crazy. Thanks for closing with Do You Realize??. It is quite possible that song is a perfect one. My friend, M, that came along with me really enjoyed her first Flaming Lips show. I think you have another new fan. Wayne's words of appreciation to us fans were touching. I think I can speak for the fan base when I say that we truly appreciate you and the music of the Flaming Lips.
See you next year,
J
